What would you suggest bringing along to field housing?

Answers from Biologists:

  • Coffee pot/pour over/French press. Life is too short for instant coffee.

  • Board games to play with the crew.

  • Puzzles.

  • Slippers. Floors in the shared housing can be gross.

  • Cultural snacks. Comfort food works wonders.

  • Patience. Also Tupperware.

  • Ear plugs.

  • Games.

  • Toilet paper. Especially if you are an IBS baddie.

  • A powerbank, especially if off-grid, but even if not.

  • Sharp kitchen knives.

  • A toolbox and duct tape.

  • A good towel and washcloth.

  • Hobbies. Knitting, crochet, embroidery supplies, even a sewing machine.

  • Whatever food nourishes you. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for it.

  • Blister pads, electrolytes, and magnesium tablets.

  • Books.

  • A good first aid kit.

  • A fan.

  • Your own sheets and pillow.

  • A way to make coffee.

  • I love to cook and bake so I bring a tote of kitchen items.

  • Long phone charger, robe, shower shoes.

  • A fan, sleep mask, and comfortable ear plugs.

  • Your own silverware. There always seems to be a shortage.

  • A good pan to cook with. Don’t feel bad about keeping it in your room.
